When you start your day off with something sweet, like this breakfast bake, it's pretty much a guarantee that it's going to be a good one. Recipe: Very Berry 4th of July Cupcakes — Recipes from The Kitchn

Ever since I started baking in my awkward tween years, I declared that every Fourth of July barbecue my family hosted needed a red, white, and blue dessert in order to be at its most festive. I scoured cookbooks and the internet to churn out things like flag cakes, berry pies, star-shaped fruit tarts, and layered fruit salads. Years later, I haven't strayed from my declaration. This is my contribution this year.

These cupcakes are as celebratory as ever: Red raspberries, white cake and buttercream, and blueberries ensure the color scheme is taken care of. Seeing as we are in the heart of berry season, the fruit lends the cupcakes the sweet juiciness that only feels right this time of year. Plus, the spike of lemon in the buttercream gives the baked treats an extra zip for good measure.

Recipe: Flag Cake — Easy Dessert Recipes

One of my favorite annual traditions is making this super-simple flag cake with my daughter. Yes, turning a cake into an American flag is somewhat cliché, but if you consider this the best way to dress up berry shortcake then it's as fun to make as it is to share.

This charming, whipped cream-frosted cake has a colorful surprise inside. It's what makes this vanilla-cake-meets-berry-shortcake recipe stand out from the rest.

Recipe: Sausage and Greens Breakfast Casserole — Quick and Easy Breakfast Recipes

When you want an egg dish to feed a crowd or make enough breakfast for the week, breakfast casseroles are just the ticket. Eggs hold together whatever ingredients you want to put in the baking dish, and in this case it's a filling combination of frozen diced potatoes, savory sausage, a whole bag of baby spinach, and, of course, a few handfuls of shredded cheese. This casserole is a bit like a diner omelette and breakfast potatoes all in one dish, and it's nice to start the day knowing you've already had a serving of greens!

How To Make the Best Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream — Ice Cream Lessons from The Kitchn

Good chocolate ice cream has contrasting allure. It's rich, cool, and creamy with dark roasted flavors only cocoa can impart. This chocolate ice cream is for the real die-hard chocolate-lovers in the group. It's sweet and malty, with the tiniest bitter tones to balance that sweetness. Almost right in the middle between dark chocolate and milk, it's the kind of chocolate ice cream that doesn't leave you wishing there was more chocolate in the mix or less.

After tasting and testing several chocolate ice cream recipes, I can firmly say this is the best one I've tried yet. For starters, this ice cream's base doesn't require tempering eggs with hot cream, so it's easier to make. It has not one but three types of chocolate, and it doesn't freeze up impossibly hard to scoop, thanks to a secret ingredient.

Recipe: Upside-Down Strawberry Skillet Cake — Easy Dessert Recipes

Of all the essential summertime desserts, I'd argue that a glossy-topped strawberry skillet cake deserves a spot at the top of your list. If not for its simple beauty and ability to wow a crowd — just look at that layer of sweet berries! — then for the tender, vanilla cornmeal cake and jammy, ginger-scented slices of strawberries.

It's a riff on our one-bowl vanilla cake, with inspiration from skillet cornbread and a nod to the sweetness of a classic upside-down cake.
