The Best Ice Cream in California: A Road Trip — Road Trips for Food-Lovers

A road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway is nearly as American as driving cross-country on Route 66. However, if your interests are culinarily minded (and let's be specific here — we're talking about folks who really, really love ice cream), we suggest you head north from San Francisco instead of south.

From the urban cool of the Bay Area to the northern California coast, with a detour into the wine-soaked wonderland of Sonoma County, this journey encompasses the very best frozen treats that the Golden State has to offer.

We Challenge You to Do This Ice Cream Road Trip in a Single Day — Road Trips for Food-Lovers

If you scream for ice cream (and don't we all?), you can experience all the cold treats that the great state of New York has to offer in a single day. Start in Brooklyn, where everything is small-batch, including the ice cream. Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan, where inventive, often wacky scoops rule the ice cream parlor stool, then meander through the quaint towns and farmlands upstate and get your fix of custard and soft serve. End your trip in the gorgeous Finger Lakes region, where you should have an ice cream sundae with a cherry on top, naturally.

Of course, you may prefer to stretch things out, interrupting your frozen sweets crusade with stops at farmers markets and orchards, bucolic inns and small-batch breweries. We're just saying: It can be done in a day.

Prepare to Freak Out Over Halo Top’s 7 New Flavors — Grocery News

Halo Top ice cream just announced that they're launching seven new flavors this month and you're going to want to try them all. For those not in the know, Halo Top is everyone's favorite low-calorie ice cream. In fact, it's the best-selling pint of ice cream in the United States right now. Most pints fall in the range of 240 to 360 calories a pint and have up to 24 grams of protein. While you definitely won't get the same mouthfeel and taste as full-fat regular ol' ice cream, Halo Top is probably the best of the low-calorie options.

The seven new flavors branch out from the more traditional offerings, including a pancakes and waffle flavor (!!!) and candy bar ice cream. The new flavors shouldn't be hitting grocery stores for a couple weeks, but if you need to get your hands on something right now, you can currently buy them online for $6.99 a pint.

Recipe: Boozy Caramel Milkshake — Easy Dessert Recipes

At Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery, the Seattle shop famous for deceivingly small chocolate cakes baked to order, it's easy to be sidetracked by the main event. When you're waiting in line — because yes, you'll probably have to wait — the scent of chocolate hovers overhead like a heavy cloud. It's easy to imagine that at any moment, the cloud will burst and Seattle's rain will turn into hot, thick chocolate. But curb your imagination: You need to focus not just on the cakes, but also on the milkshakes, which come both straight-up and laced with (usually local) booze. Our favorite, the "Extra Dark Caramel and Rye" shake, is made with the rye caramel they make in house.
